The person behind the camera

Hi — I'm Adi.

Until 2021 I had a job I was good enough at and a commute I could do half asleep. I had also been saving for years towards something I could never quite describe. In the end I stopped saving for it, bought a one-way ticket, packed a 35-litre bag and left with a camera I did not yet know how to use properly.

What happened next was not a montage. I ran out of money in the fourth month and came home. I took freelance work for a season, learned to edit properly because I could not afford to pay anyone else to, and went back out with a plan I could actually pay for. That second attempt is the one that stuck.

Since then I have filmed in the places listed on this site and written up the ones worth writing up. Ten days down the Andaman coast became Thailand Diaries. Five passes between Manali and Leh became Road Trip to Ladakh — including the two days of altitude sickness, which are still in the cut, because taking them out would have made the whole film a lie.

The one thing I have completely changed my mind about is pace. I used to do nine countries in a month. Now I do one, and I stay long enough to stop being surprised by it. The films got better and so did everything else.

Mumbai, India is home base. I edit here between trips, usually jet-lagged, with the next route half-planned on the wall.

Where things stand

SINCE 2021
2021 The year the desk job ended
5 Places filmed and written up here
3 Films in the current featured cut
Mumbai, India Where the editing gets done

That is the whole list. I don't publish follower counts — they have never once told me whether a film was any good.

How the films get made

THE PROCESS
Editing footage on a laptop at a table with a window onto the outdoors behind it

Most of a film is not filming. A shooting day is a few hours of usable light and a lot of walking, and the good minute is usually the one I nearly did not bother setting up for.

Two copies of every card go onto mirrored drives before a card is ever formatted. I have lost footage once, and only once.

Sound gets recorded twice — a wireless lav on whoever is talking, and the on-camera shotgun running the whole time as a safety track. Bad audio kills a film faster than bad pictures ever will.

The edit happens wherever I am: a hostel table, an overnight bus, the flight home. A 100W bank and a fast charger changed more about how I work than any lens I have bought.

The drone stays in the bag more often than people expect. The rules change country to country and they change often — I would rather lose the shot than the drone.

Working together

BRANDS · PRESS · LICENSING

I take on a small number of brand films a year, license footage that already exists, and answer press questions properly. Tell me what you have in mind and when you need it, and I will say honestly whether it is a fit.
