What's actually in the bag
This is the kit that leaves the house, not the kit I wish I owned. There are no affiliate links anywhere on this page, nothing here is sponsored, and none of it was sent to me — I bought all of it, mostly second hand.
I have named the type of thing rather than a model number on purpose. The body I bought in 2021 is not the one you can buy today, but the reason it is in the bag has not changed once in four years. That reasoning is the part worth copying.
Camera
-
Main body
Full-frame mirrorless, 4K 60p
Everything on this site was shot on it. In-body stabilisation is the only reason I can film walking.
-
Second body
Compact APS-C
Lives in a jacket pocket for the days I do not want to look like a film crew.
-
Wide
16–35mm f/2.8
On the camera about 60% of the time. Landscapes and anything indoors.
-
Standard
24–70mm f/2.8
The one lens I would keep if I had to lose the rest.
-
Long
70–200mm f/4
Compression shots of ridges, and portraits without standing on top of someone.
Sound & air
-
Mic
Dual-channel wireless lav
Two transmitters, so an interview never needs a second take for audio.
-
Backup
On-camera shotgun
Runs the whole time as a safety track.
-
Drone
Sub-250g folding drone
Under the registration weight in most countries I fly in. Check the rules before you take off — they change.
Carry & power
-
Pack
35L camera backpack
Side access, fits under a seat, has survived four years of airline handling.
-
Tripod
Carbon travel tripod
Light enough that I actually carry it, which is the whole point.
-
Power
100W bank + fast charger
Charges the laptop on overnight buses. This one item changed how I edit on the road.
-
Storage
2TB SSD ×2, mirrored
Two copies before a card is ever formatted. I have lost footage once and only once.
Ask me about any of it
If you want to know what I would buy on a smaller budget, what I would leave at home for a two-week trip, or which single thing I would replace first — ask. I answer gear questions properly, because somebody answered mine when I started and had no idea what I was doing.
